Q & A
One of the reasons I love and enjoy my business has to do with the people I meet. I I love getting to know both parents and kids…at the same time I get asked a lot of questions. So I thought this might be a good place to answer some basic questions…
1. I’ve had my business for thirteen years but first began working in darkrooms with all sorts of chemicals, safe lites and bad 70’s music back when I was 10. I used to love sitting in the darkroom for hours with headphones on, working on prints. ..but it was making me a bit antisocial and I found it impossible once I had my daughter. Moving to digital, definitely made life easier but also, I feel, more creative.
2. I ventured into digital 5 years ago and transferred my business entirely over to digital 2 years ago…and yes I think it’s just as good if not better than film. I wouldn’t have switched, if I didn’t believe that. What I like the most is having the design component back in my own hands. It allows me to be creative on every level, photographing and processing. I was once told the negative is the score and the print is the symphony. I like having my hands in both elements so the images look just the way I imagined them to be.
3. I work only in black and white for portraiture…I like the classic timeless feel of it.
4. You would think I’d have a house full of beautiful images of my daughter…I don’t. At this point, she’s sick of my camera…the only one who tolerates me is our dog Jake.
5. If I could have one wish it would be for Moms to be in more photographs. I look back at the images from my childhood and truly love the ones of me with my mom. I love seeing how she looked, how I looked with her and seeing the two of us together. Fast forward, I feel the same way about my daughter and I know 30 years from now she’ll be looking for these same images. Photographs are as much for us as they are for our children.
